Cookie Mix 101: Tips & Tricks to Perfection

Let’s face it: not every batch of cookies comes out looking like a Pinterest post. And when you're baking from a mix, it can be easy to think something's gone wrong if your dough is too soft, your cookies spread a little too far, or they don’t look exactly like the ones on the bag.

But here’s the thing: baking isn’t an exact science in every kitchen. Ovens run hot or cold. Some people use convection. Butter gets measured a little differently. And even a few extra drops of coconut oil can change the game.

Our cookie mix was crafted to be flexible, forgiving, and friendly to real-life conditions. We know some of you are baking with your kids, some are first-timers, and some are doing a late-night bake in between episodes of your favorite show. No matter how you mix, scoop, or chill, we want it to be easy and satisfying.

That said, here are a few helpful tips if you find your dough is acting up:

1. Dough Too Wet?
You might've added a little too much butter or not chilled the dough long enough. Try chilling it for 15–20 minutes, or add 1 tablespoon of oat flour (or regular flour) at a time until it's just sticky enough to scoop.

2. Cookies Spreading Too Much?
This usually means the dough was too warm going into the oven. Chill your dough balls longer before baking or double-check your oven temp with a thermometer.

3. Dough Too Dry or Crumbly?
You may have under-measured your fat or added too much flour. Add 1 teaspoon of plant milk or water at a time until it comes together.

4. Cookies Too Crispy?
Try baking for 1–2 minutes less and let them cool on the tray to finish setting up.

At the end of the day, this is cookie mix made for real kitchens and real people. We test, tweak, and test again so you don’t have to overthink it. But if you ever need help or want to troubleshoot your dough, you can always reach out to us at hi@chocolateandthechip.com.

Happy baking (even when it's a little messy)!
